Genesis 2

Rest. God provides us with an example of this in verse 2 as He rested on the seventh day. After all the hustle and bustle of Christmas, it feels good to just have a day (or more) to just relax.

In verse 7, it says that God formed man. Going back to the initial days of creation, there were 3 days in which God “formed”, and 3 days that God “filled” what He formed to eliminate its emptiness. This led me to the thought that we as humans have an emptiness inside us that longs to be filled. What are we choosing to fill our lives with? I believe that the emptiness we feel is a longing to be filled with the Holy Spirit.

Something I had not thought of, but came from one of my daughters, was that, it is as though God knowing the outcome, led Adam to the realization that he needed a woman. A process we as parents will often do with our children. Verses 18-22, tells us that God said to Adam that he needed a helper. After bringing all the animals his way, no helper was suitable. Nothing on the whole earth would be able to satisfy his needs. So God causes Adam to fall asleep and formed the woman out of him. It was as though Adam also had this realization of this process because when the woman was brought to him he said “this is now bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh.”.

This then brings us to the first “marriage”. Verse 24 reads, “For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and they will become one flesh.” Today, many people are saying that Christianity needs to change. That it needs to accept same sex marriages. But this verse is an example of the exact opposite. This verse provides a future relationship along with a past relationship. Not only should a man unite with a woman, but the Bible also indicates that the parents are also male and female. The Bible is constant and so should our Christian standards and beliefs remain constant.

  1. Rest isn’t something that comes easy to people and yet God, creator of the universe, can take time to rest. It’s a good reminder to seek out rest

  2. “Before any plant of the field was in the earth and before any herb of the field had grown. For the Lord God had not caused it to rain on the earth, and there was no man to till the ground.” Geneses 2:5 NKJV
My dad always taught me that if I borrow or use something, that I should return the item in the same or in better condition than when I received it. As mankind, our days are numbered and we are only going to walk this earth for a certain number of days. We are, in essence, borrowing the air we breathe and the land we walk on, from God. One of the purposes for mankind being placed on the earth is noted in the above verse – to till the ground, or to take care of God’s creation. So the question is, how are we doing at that? And will we leave God’s creation in the same condition, or better, than when we came?
