“because Abraham obeyed me and kept my requirements, my commands, my decrees and my laws.”
This verse stood out to me because prior to it, God was telling Isaac how he and his descendants would be blessed, and I was wondering ‘why?’ The verse reminded me that the choices we make today, will also affect our children along with future generations; just like it did for Abraham.
Apples don’t fall far from their tree, and Isaac is a good example of this saying. Abraham, his father, lied about Sarah being his wife for fear of losing his own life on account of her beauty, and now we read about Isaac saying the exact same thing. We see how when one generation struggles with something, that same temptation presents itself in next generation too.
Another portion of today’s Scripture that stood out to me is in verse 28a. It reads, “They answered, ‘We saw clearly that the Lord was with you.'” Isaac was not perfect. He recently lied about his wife, but it was still evident to the people of Gerar that God was with him. This caused me to question whether or not God is evident in my life to others? Can non-believers see a difference?

I thought the same thing that Isaac sure takes after his father: listening to God’s instructions, believing the promises of future descendants, experiencing God’s blessings…and lying that his wife is his sister. So interesting that Isaac AND Abraham has so much faith in God’s directions but not in God’s ability to keep their beautiful wives from others.

“Then they dug another well, but they quarrelled over that one also; so he named it Sitnah. He moved on from there and dug another well, and no one quarrelled over it. He named it Rehobath, saying, ‘Now the Lord has given us room and we will flourish in the land.’” Genesis 26:21-22
Even though it was Isaac’s servants that dug the well, they were humble and not willing to quarrel over it. They simply moved on until the people from Gerar made no dispute over who’s well it was. Even though God told Isaac that he would bless him in this land, Isaac did not make God bless him. It was only after he moved a third time, after the third well was dug with no dispute, that Isaac finally pitched his spot.
