Genesis 28

“There above it stood the Lord, and He said, ‘I am the Lord, the God of your father Abraham and the God of Isaac. I will give you and your descendants the land on which you are lying.'”

God is the supreme ruler of the universe. He calls everyone to worship Him and He tolerates no rivals. He is the creator of all things, knows all things, and controls all things. So far in Genesis, we have read how God is referred to as the Creator, the Savior, the God Most High, the Almighty, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, Provider, Judge, and also Lord.

At the tail end of verse 15 it reads, “I will not leave you until I have done what I have promised you.” Unlike other gods of pagan religions, the one true God assured Jacob that He would always be with him wherever he went.

The God we serve is active and living. Genesis is filled with pictures of who God is and how He can be known. May we place our faith and trust in this God, the God of Genesis.

  1. Perhaps there was a moment where Isaac chastised Jacob for stealing Esau’s blessing, but it isn’t recorded. Instead Jacob appears to get a free pass to choose a wife from among a ‘better’ people. I thought Esau was pretty petty to go out and take a Canaanite wife out of spite. Maybe Jacob’s obedience is what prompted God to show him the vision at Bethel?

  2. “Then Jacob made a vow, saying, ‘If God will be with me and will watch over me on this journey I am taking and will give me food to eat and clothes to wear so that I return safely to my father’s household, then the Lord will be my God.’” Genesis 28:20-21
We would read these words to mean that if God does good for me, then he can be my God. But that’s not what was meant. Rather, he should not only own him as his God and worship Him, but His goodness should impress fresh obligations upon himself and in turn, stir up a higher devoutness to serve God daily in every way.
