Genesis 38

The unsavoury events of this chapter illustrate the danger that Israel, as God’s separate people, faced if they remained among the Canaanites.

– Judah chose to leave his brothers and married a Canaanite woman. Together they had three boys.

– Judah found a wife named Tamar for his oldest son Er. Er was wicked in the sight of the Lord, so the Lord put him to death

– Onan, Judah’s second son, was asked to fulfill his duty as a brother-in-law but chose to disobey. He was also put to death by God.

– Judah tells Tamar to go live with her father back home as a widow until his youngest son, Shelah, is older. But for fear of losing him too, Judah does not send him her way.

– Tamar disguises herself as a prostitute, lets Judah sleep with her, and she becomes pregnant with twin boys.

This chapter gives an account of Judah and his family. With such an account, no one would think that our Savior, Jesus Christ, would come from him. But God shows that His choice is of grace, not merit, and that Christ came into the world to save sinners.

Thankful. for. that!

  1. You’d think that our of all the sons that Jacob had that it would not be Judah that would be the line Jesus would be born from. Judah we already learned was responsible for selling Joseph, now we read that he married a Caananite woman, raised rebellious children, lied to his daughter-in-law, frequented prostitutes, and then slept with his daughter in law. But God uses us in our weakness and Tamar gets one of the distinctions of being one of the few women mentioned in Jesus’ genealogy….even though deception brought her there.

  2. “But Er, Judah’s first born, was wicked in the Lord’s sight; so the Lord put him to death.” The punishment for sin is death. We see this in two of Judah’s sons and should act as a reminder that while their sin resulted in physical death and separation form the world, our sin results in eternal death and separation from Christ.
