Joseph has now spent two full years waiting in jail. Waiting for the order so he can be released from prison. Waiting for the chief cupbearer to remember how he assisted him. The Scripture doesn’t say, so I’m making an assumption, but I’m also sure that Joseph was also asking God and waiting for Him to intervene in this situation. There is a time for all things, even though the waiting may seem to drag on. But when it does come, it appears to have come at the best time, so we ought to wait for it.
“‘I cannot do it’, Joseph replied to Pharaoh, ‘but God will give Pharaoh the answer he desires.'” Joseph understood that interpreting dreams did not come by his own power or virtue, but that it only came by the inspiration of his great God. Therefore, Joseph gives the honour to God, to whom it was due, but this also leads to Pharaoh the great knowledge that he has of God.
Not only did God provide Joseph with the interpretation of Pharoah’s dream, He also provided him with wisdom and a plan that “seemed good to Pharoah and all his officials.” Pharoah realizing this, then appoints Joseph to be in charge of his palace having all his people submitting to his orders.
What a turn of events. From being locked up in prison to being second in command to only Pharoah himself! Joseph displayed patience while waiting in prison, humility by giving all the praise to God, and he showed respect to Pharoah; providing him with sound advice. Patience, humility, and respect. Three things that may be looked at by many as a weakness, and yet these are three qualities that brought Joseph in to being second in command.

Everything can change in an instant; for good or for bad. Joseph had both situations: to go from favourite son with a maginificant coat to a sold slave… then a slave to a position of power to jail for a false accusation ….and from jail to second in command. But Joseph remained steadfast through all these circumstances knowing God had a plan.
One thing I wondered as I read today’s passage…did others know the famine was coming? Or was this privilege intell that only Pharoah and Joseph and the people on staff to collect the 1/5 of the plentiful harvest?? Could others have prepared for the famine themselves or did God want them to rely on Pharoas storehouses? We know God intended Joseph’sbrothers to end up in Egypt but did others know about the famine? The takeaway from this might be to always know that circumstances can change I am instant but that God is working behind the scenes to make the situation bearable.
