Leviticus 22

The priests were not to approach the Israelites sacred offerings if they were unclean. If they did, they would be cut off from God’s presence. Even though the priests were servants of God, they needed to perform their calling being cleansed and acceptable to God.

This led me to think that if a person is performing their duty or calling, whether it’s teaching a class, ushering, playing in the worship band, setting up communion, or any other task, if they are not approaching their duty with a clean heart, it will not be pleasing to God.

If we cannot approach God without being clean, how can we think He will accept our actions, even if they’re good?

Verse two in the KJV reads, “Speak unto Aaron and to his sons, that they separate themselves from the holy things of the children of Israel, and that they profane not my holy name in those things which they hallow unto me: I am the Lord

God commanded the priests to separate themselves from the offerings in order to have them evaluate themselves and make sure they were clean. The reality is, we need to separate ourselves from the things that make us unclean.

  1. “I am the Lord” is the refrain of this passage. While it sounds like the parental “because I said so” It is actually without need of explanation. In the Growing Kids God’s Way course, we learned to give the moral reason why when parenting our children. The moral reason why God gives us these commands is that He is the Lord and being all knowing and all powerful He already knows what is good and we need to have faith to trust in His ways.
