“I will send you such a blessing in the sixth year that the land will yield enough for three years.”
Every seventh year was to be a year of rest from occupying the land, a sabbatical year. In this, God expected from the Israelites extraordinary instances of faith and obedience, and in return the Israelites might expect extraordinary instances of goodness and blessings from God in providing for them.
To purposefully not sow a field in year seven, even though you just reaped enough for three years, was probably hard to do. It is human nature to always want more; more money, more clothes, more food, more toys, more books, or more conveniences. Having more gives us a visual sense of security, but God calls us to keep our eyes on Him and to place our securities in Him. After all, everything we have comes from Him.

Forced rest. That’s a hard concept. We need it, we thrive when we are rested, and God commands it. It is when we restthat we find time to be still with God and reflect on His commands. Satan would love nothing more than to starve us from rest so that we are tired, annoyed, and too busy to lean of God and trust Him with our needs.
