Numbers 10

“Now Moses said to Hobab son of Ruel the Midinite, Moses’ father-in-law, ‘We are setting out for the place about which the Lord said, ‘I will give it to you.’ Come with us and we will treat you well, for the Lord has promised good things to Israel.’ He answered, ‘No, I will not go; I am going back to my own land and my own people.’ But Moses said, ‘Please do not leave us. You know where we should camp in the desert, and you can be our eyes. If you come with us, we will share with you whatever good things the Lord gives us.'”

A couple of thoughts came to my mind on the above verses. The first is, just as Moses knew of God’s goodness and His leading to the promised land, he wanted to share that goodness with others. In the same way, we are also called to tell others of God’s goodness and the promised land (Heaven) that He will take us home to.

Second, Moses recognized that he still needed to do all that he could do, in addition to following God’s lead. God provided the cloud which would direct the Israelites where they should camp and what direction they must travel, but by having Hobab with them he could provide Moses with additional insight as to where water or pasture may be, as well as warn them of possible dangers.

Lastly, all good things are from the Lord. In times where we have been successful, we tend to credit what we have done along the journey to our accomplishment. But we need to be reminded that it’s God who gives us the tools to use and ought to give Him the glory for what we have.

  1. Good thoughts.

What stood out for me today was that there were two signals that the Israelites needed to heed: a single trumpet blown and two trumpets blown. I would think this would be hard to determine without careful listening. We still need to listen carefully to God’s prompting to understand what we are to do next.
