Numbers 13

I found it interesting that the spies were exploring the land for forty days, and didn’t appear to be losing their patience nor becoming frustrated while investigating. This most likely showed that the land promised to them by God was impressive.

Not only were the spies seemingly patient, but the rest of the Israelites who were left behind were patiently waiting for their report. It also seemed interesting that they were brought by God to the outskirts of Canaan, but didn’t trust God enough to actually enter.

This brought an image to me of our family going on a road trip to Disney World. After driving for two solid days we finally arrive at Disney. But instead of entering the park, we simply stay on the outside of the fence peeking through the gate and look. There is no way that would happen!

Based on all the assurances and success they received from the Lord, along with the continual series of miracles, they should have been excited to enter the land. Rather than being brought to a certainty of God’s covenant, they distrusted God’s power and promises, and would rather be held in suspense by their own counsels.

Just like the Israelites, how much do we stand in our own light by our unbelief!

  1. I kept thinking of the old Sunday school song “12 men went to spy on Canaan…10 were bad and two were good…” It’s easier to go the safe route and to side with the majority. It’s much more difficult to have the perspective that God has brought us this far and will see us through even when there are literal giants in our way. May our perspective always be the one that has us put our faith in God.
