I’ve always liked this story as it gives me the mental picture of Christ giving life to death. The twelve staffs provided by the tribes would have been old staffs, ones that would have been used for years, with ultimately no possible life left in them. To even have one bud a sprout would have been nothing less than a miracle, but to have one bud, blossom, and produce almonds is even further unbelievable!
“The Israelites said to Moses, ‘We will die! We are lost, we are all lost! Anyone who even comes near the tabernacle of the Lord will die. Are we all going to die?'”
The verse indicates that if the Israelites overstep their boundaries, in coming near the tabernacle of the Lord, they will die. The people finally realized the sin of their arrogance in challenging Aaron’s role. They overstepped their boundary. Similarly, when we overstep our boundaries and sin, we die too.

Unfortunately, not much has changed since the beginning of time. We still challenge God. We still need a sign. We still lack faith in believing what God says is true. When we finally do get our answers from God we are humbled by the realization that we are so unworthy and yet still loved by a gracious God.

How true. And when we receive a sign, we ask for a sign to confirm the sign.
