This has to be one of the most unique stories in the Bible. I always find it comical to see how God can even use a donkey to get His point across to us.
“But God said to Balaam, “Do not go with them. You must not put a curse on those people, because they are blessed.” (Vs 12)
“That night God came to Balaam and said, ‘Since these men have come to summon you, go with them, but do only what I tell you.'” (Vs 20)
“But God was angry when he went, and the angel of the Lord stood in the road to oppose him.” (Vs 22a)
These verses appear to be a contradiction between the permission God grants Balaam, the prohibition He gave earlier, and then the anger the Lord displays against Balaam on his journey. The difficulty is best understood as lying in the contrary character of Balaam. God had forbidden him to curse Israel. He then allowed Balaam to go, but only if he would follow the Lord’s direction. But Balaam’s real intentions were known to the Lord, and so with severe displeasure, God confronted the pagan prophet.
Today’s reading reminded me of two things. Firstly, our heart and our intentions are more important than our actions. Secondarily, if God can use a donkey, he can also use us to do His work.

I think the most surprising thing was not that the donkey spoke but that Balaam did not really seemed to be surprised that the donkey spoke! He calmly answered the donkey’s question. I agree with you that if God can use a donkey, then surely he can use us too.
