Numbers 27

“Moses said to the Lord, ‘May the Lord, the God of the spirits of all mankind, appoint a man over this community to go out and come in before them, one who will lead them out and bring them in, so the Lord’s people will not be like sheep without a shepherd.'”

Moses spoke these words in response after God informs him that he will soon receive payment (death) for his prior disobedience. The Lord said to Moses that he will have the chance to see the land that the Lord is providing the Israelites, but that he will not be able to enter. Moses could have responded with a number of different ways, but he chose to respond with a genuine concern for the remaining Israelites asking that God would appoint a leader to shepherd God’s people.

We are all held accountable for our actions. Moses did not complain, change his character, nor lose his loyalty to God after hearing his sentence. Instead, he commissioned Joshua just as the Lord commanded.

  1. Two things stood out:

    1. Many people try to make the bible out to be against women’s rights but there are so many examples of the bible being for women. In this reading, they receive the same rights as sons would have…this would have been very contrary to the practice at the time.

    2. In my school, we ‘transition’ students from one grade to another by physically taking them to the next grade’s class and handing them off to the next teacher by visiting the classroom. Symbolically they begin to see the next teacher as their teacher and Moses does the same hand off to Joshua. Just like my students feel secure in me and my passing them off, the Israelites could feel secure in Moses leaving them in capable hands.
