I thought it was interesting that six of the forty-eight towns given to the Levites were for refuge use only. Were there that many unintentional murders?
The city of refuge reminded me of the refuge we have in Christ. The city was intended as a refuge for all. The door was always open, day or night. The city of refuge offered support to those that entered. Those who reached the city of refuge would live by faith and have hope of having life.
It was only after the death of the high priest that those in the city of refuge would be set free. As it was only after the death of Christ that we would also have the opportunity to be set free.
Just as those living in the city of refuge were now exiles from their family, so are we, who have refuge in Christ, are exiles from our family (the world).
Today’s reading was a great reminder of the refuge we have in Christ. Even though we intentionally sin and don’t deserve this gift, it remains available for everyone.

I’ve often thought the same thing…were there that many unintentional deaths? Maybe without the modern medicine or safety precautions there were many accidents that resulted in death.
“This will ensure that the land where you live will not be polluted, for murder pollutes the land. And no sacrifice except the execution of the murderer can purify the land from murder.”
Numbers 35:33 NLT
We can’t let sin take hold. It pollutes our thinking and actions and it’s best to get rid of it.
