Numbers 36

I’m not totally sure how this all went down and if there was tension within this clan. The Bible didn’t say there was, so maybe there wasn’t……

But it almost appears as though the family heads may have gone behind the backs of Zelophehad’s daughters and posed the question to Moses about their family inheritance.

Either way, I give credit to the daughters. A restriction was now imposed and added on them receiving their inheritance after the fact. After hearing “They may marry anyone they please as long as they marry within the tribal clan of their father” they could have reacted in a number of different ways, but they chose to do as the Lord commanded.

As we’re going about our day, or even playing a game, we can become frustrated if the rules change on us. These daughters did not focus on what could have felt like a new restriction, but remained focused on obeying God’s command.

  1. I think it’s hard to be obedient but the daughters stood to gain more than they would have lost by marrying in their father’s tribe. We encourage our kids not to settle in regards to non-negotiable characteristics they desire in a spouse. Obviously the daughters chose “from my father’s tribe’ as an item on their list that they refused to compromise on.
