Judges 16

“One day Samson went to Gaza, where he saw a prostitute. He went in to spend the night with her.”

Satan knows our weaknesses. Samson, who had great physical strength, was weak in his moral strength. Satan does not tempt us where we are strong, but at our weakest point. This is not the first time that we read about Samson making a bad choice in regards to women, and unfortunately it’s also not the last. It’s also somewhat fitting how it’s his eyes that led him to the women, and it’s the women (Delilah in particular) who led him to losing his eyes.

This reminds of the words to a song, “Oh be careful little eyes what you’ve seen”. Like our yoga teacher instructs us where to look; because where we look is where we’re going, and if we look at the wrong place, we will fall out of posture. The same goes with our Christian walk, we need to stay focused on, and looking towards God.

  1. A few things that stood out for me from today’s reading:

-we all have a price. For Judas it was 30 pieces of silver. For Delilah it was 1100. Interesting that Samson was worth more or maybe Delilah needed more incentive to betray her husband and Judas may have just wanted to make a quick buck thinking that Jesus wouldn’t be found guilty anyway?? What are we willing to betray for a price?

-Samson is stupid. When he lies to Delilah about the source of his strength, she tests it. Did he really think she wouldn’t when he told her the truth?

-Samson is weak and immature. His first wife cried to get her way. Delilah nagged and Samson gave in. He could not stand up for himself and ultimately paid the price for that. He lost his wife because his temper got the best of him and he lost his strength when God left him due to his disobedience.

-Samson asked God to still use him even though he didn’t deserve it. He asks for his power to return and to die with the . God grants this desire. Odd though that Samson’s motivation was not to honour God in His plan to overthrow the Philistines but that it was to take revenge on his lost eyes.
