Yesterday we read how Naomi felt that the Lord was punishing her and as a result, she became bitter. In today’s reading, her perspective has changed. After seeing all that Ruth had gleaned in the field she said, “God hasn’t quite walked out on us after all! He still loves us in bad times as well as good.” (The Message)
Prior to Naomi’s positive comment, she agreed to let Ruth go out into the field so she could glean some grain for them. The field that she would end up working in turned out to be non other than a relative of Naomi’s now deceased husband, Boaz. The fact that God led Ruth to work in Boaz’s field was encouraging for Naomi, and this also awakened her hope in God.
When things are going well for us, we don’t want anything to change and we aren’t looking for greener pastures. This chapter reminded me that in times of difficulty, we shouldn’t focus on the greener pasture out there, but rather focus on what God is doing in our situation and how He is walking us through it.

We don’t always see how God is at work in the present but in looking back we can see how God’s hand is at work. It reminds me of the tapestry that I had the chance to see in the Corrie Ten Boom museum. From one side it is a tangle messy web of strings. On the other side was the completed crown tapestry. To only look at one side only would not reveal the masterpiece the creator was working on.
