Psalm 73

This is a Psalm on temptation. How the writer was tempted, how they got through the temptation, and how afterward this made them better for it.

“They boast against the very heavens, and their words strut throughout the earth.” Psalm 73:9 (NLT) “Therefore their people turn to them and drink up waters in abundance.” Psalm 73:10 (NIV)

Wicked people appear to prosper, and with their lack of concern, it lures others to follow them. They live what seems like a care free life, they have it made, and their wealth continues to grow.

But that is foolish thinking.

“So I tried to understand why the wicked prosper. But what a difficult task it is! Then I went into your sanctuary, O God, and I finally understood the destiny of the wicked.” Psalm 73:16-17 NLT

It was only when the Psalmist went into the sanctuary of God that they received understanding; the understanding that the wealth of the wicked is only temporary. By having to go in, or enter, Scripture implies that this understanding can only be made known when we have decided to dwell with God.

“Yet I am always with you; you hold me by your right hand. You guide me with your counsel, and afterward you take me into glory.” Psalm 73:23-24

While we are on earth, if we allow Him to, the Lord will wisely and tenderly lead us. Our reward will be eternal blessings, while those that are wicked, will receive eternal condemnation.

  1. This stood out for me: “Those who desert him will perish, for you destroy those who abandon you.”
    ‭‭Psalms‬ ‭73:27‬ ‭NLT‬‬

It’s all about timing. When we admire the people who seem to be ‘thriving’ despite living in sin, we might actually envy them. The bible tells us that our time on earth is so fleeting and there will come a time when those who have not turned to God will be subject to His wrath and I’m sure that there will be no envy at their place in life at that moment.
