1 Chronicles 10

“So Saul died because he was unfaithful to the Lord. He failed to obey the Lord’s command, and he even consulted a medium instead of asking the Lord for guidance. So the Lord killed him and turned the kingdom over to David son of Jesse.” 1 Chronicles 10:13-14

These are the last words in this chapter spoken of Saul. This reminded me of a tombstone and how the words written on it typically causes a person to reflect back on who that person was. Well based on this “tombstone”, Saul was unfaithful towards God, he failed to obey God’s commands, he consulted a medium for guidance, and as a result of these actions, this brought his dynasty to an end.

When Saul helped to defeat the Ammonites (in 1 Samuel 11) the Spirit of God was upon him. Then when he was later anointed king, he gave full credit to the Lord in his victory over the Ammonites. Unfortunately, those aspects of Saul are not mentioned in today’s chapter.

This chapter was a good reminder for me that it’s not how you start, but how you finish. May we finish as Paul instructs in 1 Timothy 6:12 to “Fight the good fight of faith” and to “lay hold on eternal life.”

  1. One thing I thought of when reading today was that it’s interesting that Saul and his sons were fighting in this battle. In light of the Prince Harry/Megan Markle news as of late, it made me think that ‘royalty’ aren’t that different than the rest of us. In the case of Saul and his sons, they still had battles to fight despite their status. In the current royal family, they want to live as regular people.

Also why does the government have a “designated survivor” plan and Saul did not?? I guess it was the Lord’s plan that Saul’s entire dynasty would end and no plan to stop that would have succeeded anyway.
