“For God is the King of all the earth; sing praises with understanding.” Psalm 47:7 NKJV
God is King, and with that He deserves our praises. When a parent lays out rules for a child, it is not always required by the parent to provide the child with a moral reason “why” the rule is to be followed. But in this verse, we are told to praise God with understanding, and in the preceding verses, the writer provides us with some “why’s”.
I like how The Message closes this chapter by saying that the, “Princes from all over are gathered, people of Abraham’s God. The powers of earth are God’s – he soars over all.”
By definition, when a bird soars, it maintains height in the air without flapping its wings. The bird, while soaring, is not in panic mode and no energy is used. This is our Lord – soaring above all with ease. One day, every knee will bow and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord – even the knees and tongues of our earthly rulers.

This stood out for me: “For the Lord Most High is awesome. He is the great King of all the earth.”
Psalms 47:2
The title of ‘King’ is pretty impressive, but King of all the earth is kind of mind blowing. We recently heard a message that alluded to the fact “awesome” has become overused and it’s meaning (to inspire awe) has been cheapened. When we truly stop and consider who God there is no doubt in the praise He is due.
