Psalm 101

For a chapter only having 8 verses, I felt there was a lot of good insight and instruction.

“I will set nothing wicked before my eyes;” Psalm 101:3a NLT

For myself, I have had a lot of Scripture point out to me lately the importance of where our focus is. It is our eyes that see, which can influence our thoughts, that can shape our will. In order to effectively shape our will and desires, we need to start at the foundation – our eyes.

“I will search for faithful people to be my companions.” (Psalm 101:6a NLT) “They’re the ones I want working with me.” (Psalm 101:6b The Message)

As parents, we have often mentioned to our children the importance of selecting good friends. This verse emphasizes the fact that we are to search for them. We are to take the initiative in seeking them out and not sit on the sidelines waiting for them to find us.

We have read in previous chapters of how God is faithful to us. Today’s chapter turns the table and reminds us that we are to be faithful to Him as well.

  1. Verse 6 stood out for me for the same reason.
“I will search for faithful people to be my companions. Only those who are above reproach will be allowed to serve me.”
    ‭‭Psalms‬ ‭101:6‬ ‭NLT‬‬

We become like the people we surround ourselves with. Especially when the influence of parents shifts in importance. While we pray for our kids, we should also pray for their friends as well. May we also be, and encourage our kids to be, the kind of people that would act in ways ‘above reproach’
