Psalm 39

“I said I will watch my ways and keep my tongue from sin;” Psalm 39:1 NIV

This is the first verse of the Psalm and it would also be a great prayer and promise to begin each day. The Message translated it this way, “I’m determined to watch steps and tongue so they won’t land me in trouble.”

We choose between good and evil, right and wrong. Just as the verse says, we need to be determined to watch our steps. We need to be purposeful in our actions. It is a decision that we need to make daily, and we cannot succeed on our own strength.

“And so, Lord, where do I put my hope? My only hope is in you. Rescue me from my rebellion.” Psalm 39:7-8a NLT

This chapter is a prayer for wisdom, strength, and forgiveness. All of which we cannot find within ourselves; this is from God. May we be purposeful and determined in praying for, and seeking the first two, in hopes of reducing the times required in asking for the last.

  1. This stood out for me: “You have made my life no longer than the width of my hand. My entire lifetime is just a moment to you; at best, each of us is but a breath.”
    ‭‭Psalms‬ ‭39:5‬ ‭NLT‬‬

When we think of our life in God’s eyes, we can’t help but think of how little we matter in the grand scheme of things. It’s strangely comforting to know that we are just a breath and then our lives are over. It helps us focus on what’s truly important.
