“My child, listen to what I say, and treasure my commands. Tune your ears to wisdom, and concentrate on understanding.” Proverbs 2:1-2 NLT
In the first verse, the writer uses the word listen. Other translations use the word accept, receive, or take to heart. If we are listening, then we are doing more than just hearing the words being spoken. While searching for the word listen on the internet, I came across the following quote:
“Most people do not listen with the intent to understand; they listen with the intent to reply.” – Stephen R.
Good point. What is our purpose in listening – to understand or reply? Verse 2 above tells us to tune in on wisdom and concentrate on understanding. Further in the chapter, verse 6 says, “For the Lord grants wisdom! From his mouth come knowledge and understanding.”
The Lord is the giver of all things good – wisdom is one of those good things.

“Tune your ears to wisdom, and concentrate on understanding. Cry out for insight, and ask for understanding.”
Proverbs 2:2-3 NLT
Verse 2 stood out for me too. When we “tune” we are seeking wisdom out and hearing wisdom without any interference. Having just come from a wisdom seeking conversation with our son, I think he was tuning into wisdom and crying out for insight and asking for understanding. Now it will be up to him to accept wisdom in our advice and whether to act on our advice or to seek his own way.
