Proverbs 9

“Leave your simple ways behind, and begin to live; learn to use good judgment.” Proverbs 9:6

Being referred to as a simple person with simple ways would not be a complement. According to the Oxford dictionary, simpleminded is “having or showing very little intelligence or judgment”. Some synonyms are childlike, naive, clueless, and ignorant.

Those who are simple, are considered to be weak and can be persuaded to do that which is unhealthy. They are blown by the wind and tossed by the waves in various directions – their loyalty is shared between God and the world and they are unstable in everything they do.

One commentary wrote these words regarding this verse: “Their is no true wisdom other than the way of religion. A man cannot be profitable to God; it is for our own good. Observe the shame and ruin of those who slight it. God is not the Author of sin: and Satan can only tempt, he cannot force.”

Satan can only tempt, he cannot force us to do his will. We are told to learn to use good judgment as wisdom invites everyone to join her. It is not enough for us to forsake the foolish, we must also join with those that walk in wisdom. Will we accept the invitation?

This stood out for me too:
“Leave your simple ways behind, and begin to live; learn to use good judgment.””
    ‭‭Proverbs‬ ‭9:6‬ ‭NLT‬‬

It makes me think of the saying “when you know better, you do better”

Sometimes our ‘simple’ minds overlook things. I think of how oblivious I was to the absence of minorities in my classroom library. It simply wasn’t something I noticed or was aware could be an issue. Now I understand the importance of representation and with the recent protests regarding Black Lives Matter, it is yet another reminder that to ignore race in my classroom is simply not an option and I must leave that mindset behind and begin to live and teach in such a way that makes a positive difference. I will use good judgment to teach my students about the harmful ways people have been and are treated because of their race. Maybe this awareness will help change the future perspective they have and they will show empathy to others and learn to use good judgment as well.
