Proverbs 11

Today’s Proverb had many wise sayings with great advice for various aspects of our lives. Below are a couple of verses that stood out to me:

“When the wicked die, their hopes die with them, for they rely on their own feeble strength.” Proverbs 11:7 NLT

How depressing it must be to have no hope after death, believing that this is all that life has to offer. I liked Matthew Henry’s comment on this verse: “When a godly man dies, all his fears vanish; but when a wicked man dies, his hopes vanish.”

“The whole city celebrates when the godly succeed; they shout for joy when the wicked die.” Proverbs 11:10

How true. This verse, however, reminded me of the flip side in the recent passing of Ravi Zacharias – a Godly man who was doing so much for God’s Kingdom. We celebrate the life he lived and we can shout for joy knowing he is with his Heavenly Father, but our hearts are saddened with his passing.

“If you search for good, you will find favour; but if you search for evil, it will find you.” Proverbs 11:27 NLT

A good reminder that what we seek, we will find. We will either seek mischief or good, but we can’t seek both.

  1. I also had a few verses that stood out for me:
“Pride leads to disgrace, but with humility comes wisdom.”
    ‭‭Proverbs‬ ‭11:2‬ ‭NLT‬‬

This made me think of Survivor. The person that boasts and is arrogant about being the swing vote is usually the one who goes home next.

“Riches won’t help on the day of judgment, but right living can save you from death.”
    ‭‭Proverbs‬ ‭11:4‬ ‭NLT‬‬

Covid illustrated this well. Even the big wealthy companies (Disney, NHL, Broadway) closed. They could not ‘buy’ themselves out of the pandemic. Rich and poor were forced to do the same thing: stay home and be healthy.

“Without wise leadership, a nation falls; there is safety in having many advisers.”
    ‭‭Proverbs‬ ‭11:14‬ ‭NLT‬‬

Leadership is important and a wise and effective leader is one who seeks advice and wisdom instead of just trying to do everything on their own. There is ‘safety’ in advice because you’re less likely to go against what others have indicated is a problem. Also if things do go wrong, the blame is spread out and everyone has a stake in it and are less likely to be upset because the decision was made collectively.
