Proverbs 16

“Commit your actions to the Lord, and your plans will succeed.” Proverbs 16:3 NLT

The words commit your actions to the Lord, is compared to as a burden too heavy for us to carry, in that we are pleading with God and making an earnest appeal for help. It is when we leave our actions and thoughts with the Lord for His glory, that by doing so, we can also depend on God’s providence and grace for assistance in those plans.

“The silver-haired head is a crown of glory, if it is found in the way of righteousness.” Proverbs 16:31 NKJV

Grey hair is a crown of glory……really?? If I took a poll of middle aged people, most likely the majority are hiding and covering up their “crown of glory”. But in thinking about this, a few thoughts came to my mind. First of all, life is a gift from God, and we can be taken away at any time. Also, in living our lives, we have a two choices. We can live an ungodly life, which will then feel like a long, cursed life. Or we can live a life found in the way of righteousness – being useful, blessing others, and being well respected and admired by those in our lives. The crown of glory – a great honour, as it is a blessing of God, a token of great experience and prudence.

  1. I’m among the ones hiding my crown of glory 🙈 I think the verse implies that when you have reached an age where you have a ‘crown of glory’ your influence can be very substantial. I remember a missionary from our church saying that his age and grey hair allowed him more respect and authority than someone who appeared young.

Of course one of my favourite verses stood out for me: “We can make our plans, but the Lord determines our steps.”

As a planner and someone who desires to know things, this reminder that we can plan all we want but ultimately God is in control. There is much peace in that knowing that even when we make bad decisions, God can still redeem us.
