Proverbs 25

In today’s chapter of Proverbs I found many verses with great insight. Here’s a few that stood out to me:

“It is the glory of God to conceal a matter; to search out a matter is the glory of kings.” Proverbs 25:2 NIV

When I hear of scientists that have come up with theories on creation and nature, it is for their glory that they have (hopefully) found the answer. However, the more we search the more we discover the mysteries of God and His creation. And the more we discover, the more we realize an even greater depth to which we still have no idea.

“Like one who takes away a garment on a cold day, or like vinegar poured on a wound, is one who sings songs to a heavy heart.” Proverbs 25:20 NIV

A reminder that quite often we do not know what a person needs. Sometimes it may just be a closed mouth and an open ear.

“If you see your enemy hungry, go buy him lunch; if he’s thirsty, bring him a drink.” Proverbs 25:21 The Message

We are to show love to everyone – not just to those whom we appreciate and love, but our enemies as well. Love is an action, not a feeling. I liked this translation because it says that we are to go buy lunch and bring our enemies a drink. This shows that effort is required and it is not intended to be an easy box that we can ‘check off’ from a list.

  1. So many nuggets in today’s reading:

“Trustworthy messengers refresh like snow in summer. They revive the spirit of their employer.”
    ‭‭Proverbs‬ ‭25:13‬ ‭NLT‬‬

This stood out for a few reasons: who wants snow in the summer?! Or is it so rare as snow in summer that an employer can find a trustworthy messenger?!

“Do you like honey? Don’t eat too much, or it will make you sick!”
    ‭‭Proverbs‬ ‭25:16‬ ‭NLT‬‬

Moderation makes honey taste good. Too much will be unpleasant. This can be applied to many things in our lives if we overindulge: media, spending, over eating. When we overindulge in these things it makes us unhealthy.

“It’s better to live alone in the corner of an attic than with a quarrelsome wife in a lovely home.”
    ‭‭Proverbs‬ ‭25:24‬ ‭NLT‬‬

I think this verse could read like this in my situation: it’s better for my kids to be single then for them to be with the wrong person or heartbroken from a breakup.
