“Words alone will not discipline a servant; the words may be understood, but they are not heeded.” Proverbs 29:19 NLT
A slave responds to correction because of fear – fear of punishment, not words. I am reminded of the contrast between the obedience of a willing son to that of the grudging obedience of a slave in Romans 8:15 which says,”The Spirit you received does not make you slaves, so that you live in fear again; rather, the Spirit you received brought about your adoption to sonship. And by Him we cry ‘Abba, Father’.” Slaves serve out of reluctance, but an son – one brought out from slavery – will serve from the love of His instruction.
“Many seek the ruler’s favour, but justice comes from the Lord.” Proverbs 29:26 NLT
It is true that while living in this world we are working under and for mankind. Our ability to humbly please our leader and assisting them in reaching their goals, ultimately provides us with approval and potentially a financial benefit. But the wisest choice, however, is to look to God for favour as he is the Ruler of rulers. A reminder to “work willingly at whatever you do, as though you were working for the Lord rather than for people.” (Colossians 3:23 NLT)

Good thoughts.
This stood out for me: “To discipline a child produces wisdom, but a mother is disgraced by an undisciplined child.”
Proverbs 29:15 NLT
We live in a society that doesn’t believe in absolute truth. Therefore to discipline children is subjective because what a parent may believe to be truth is not always seen that way by a child. Children have been told that they have rights, that they can choose for themselves, and that they have power. Unfortunately, this is often taken too far and children who do not have the brain capacity nor the experience nor ability to see the long term consequences are often put in a position where they make the important decisions. To discipline is not inappropriate but rather produces wise children who are able to make wise choices because they have been taught how. Disgrace falls on those who are not brought up well.
