2 Chronicles 9

“King Solomon was richer and wiser than all the other kings of the earth – he surpassed them all. Kings came from all over the world to be with Solomon and get in on the wisdom God had given him.” 2 Chronicles 9:22-23 The Message

King Solomon would have been considered by many as one who had it all. As this verse states, he had surpassed all other kings of the earth in wealth and in wisdom. This chapter mentions much of Solomon’s wealth and yet in Ecclesiastes chapter 2:18-19, Solomon tells us that all his hard work is meaningless because he has to leave it to the one who becomes behind him – and “who can tell whether my successors will be wise or foolish?”.

Despite having it all, it would appear as though Solomon was not happy. True wisdom and happiness go hand in hand, but no such alliance exists between wealth and the enjoyment of life. Let us then remind ourselves that everything we have comes from the Lord, not only our wealth and wisdom, but our peace and happiness as well.

  1. This stood out for me: “When the queen of Sheba realized how wise Solomon was, and when she saw the palace he had built, she was overwhelmed. She was also amazed at the food on his tables, the organization of his officials and their splendid clothing, the cup-bearers and their robes, and the burnt offerings Solomon made at the Temple of the Lord.”
    ‭‭2 Chronicles‬ ‭9:3-4‬ ‭NLT‬‬

As you mentioned, Solomon appeared to “have it all”. Our outward appearances can be deceptive. I’m sure the Queen of Sheba believe that with all of Solomon’s wisdom and riches (it says he gifted her with even more than she gifted him) that Solomon possesses that he really did have it all. I’m sure she never considered that even in Solomon’s wisdom and knowing that he should do the right thing that he would choose against that and eventually his legacy would be that he failed where it really counted.
