Amos 3

“Do two walk together unless they have agreed to do so?” Amos 3:3 NIV

A simple verse from today’s text and yet practical. In order for two individuals to walk together they must first agree to it. The Message paraphrases this verse as, “Do two people walk hand in hand if they aren’t going to the same place?”

This verse emphasizes walking together with the idea of having harmony with the partner we are walking with; having peace with each other and being comfortable as friends.

Now, if along the walk one person takes a detour they are no longer walking hand in hand – they are no longer together and no longer in the presence of one another.

The same goes for our spiritual journey with the Lord. It is only in our obedience that we can say that we are “walking with the Lord”. When we take a detour and wander off in a direction that is contrary to His path, we are no longer in His presence and no longer in His company.

As we go about our day, may we choose to follow His instructions walking hand in hand with the Lord – not making a new path but following His lead wherever He goes

  1. I guess unless you’re grocery guy walking *really* close to another party and you think they belong together 😛

    This stood out for me:
“This is what the Lord says: “A shepherd who tries to rescue a sheep from a lion’s mouth will recover only two legs or a piece of an ear. So it will be for the Israelites in Samaria lying on luxurious beds, and for the people of Damascus reclining on couches.”
    ‭‭Amos‬ ‭3:12‬ ‭NLT‬‬

There is always forgiveness offered to those who truly repent but there are times that repentance comes but only after severe consequences must endure.
For a shepherd, I guess 2 legs and an ear are better than no sheep at all…but whatever situation caused the sheep to end up in the lion’s mouth likely could have been prevented before the sheep ended up in pieces. Flirting with sin has consequences that can leave us feeling less than whole. We may not even fully realize the danger we are in until it has damaged us severely.
