“For I know the vast number of sins and the depth of your rebellions. You oppress good people by taking bribes and deprive the poor of justice in the courts…….Instead, I want to see a mighty flood of justice, an endless river of righteous living.” Amos 5:14 & 24 NLT
This passage reminded me of Matthew 5:6a which reads, “God blesses those who hunger and thirst for justice,”.
Hunger and thirst represent desperate longings, both of which are frequent human urges. It is very satisfying to eat a meal when we are hungry or to drink a glass of water when we are thirsty. Having a hunger is often used to convey a consuming desire – like a sports team hungry for a championship, or an individual who, after a string of failures, is hungry for success.
This passage is a challenge for us today (spoken to the Israelites at that time) to desire a different kind of hunger – a hunger and thirst towards righteous living. May we submit daily to the challenge of righteous living, having a thirst and a hunger to live according to God’s will instead of our own.

This stood out for me: “For I know the vast number of your sins and the depth of your rebellions. You oppress good people by taking bribes and deprive the poor of justice in the courts. So those who are smart keep their mouths shut, for it is an evil time.”
Amos 5:12-13 NLT
We like watching crime drama shows. However, it’s interesting to note that even though the shows are fictional, like there is more than an element of truth in them as we see how the guilty get away with their crimes and how silence or selective sharing can influence people to act how you want them to. Not much has changed in over 2000 years…we still are sinful.
