Amos 9

In this chapter, Amos receives another vision from the Lord and this vision spoke of three key points: Israel will be destroyed, the Lord’s judgment upon sinners is inescapable, and that the Lord promises restoration. But today it was the point of restoration that stood out to me.

“‘The time will come,’ says the Lord, ‘when the grain and grapes will grow faster than they can be harvested. Then the terraced vineyards on the hills of Israel will drip with sweet wine!'” Amos 9:13 NLT

The beauty within the Lord’s restoration is that He doesn’t just bring us back to where we thought we once were. He is perfect, so He can only bring us to a place of perfection. This reminded me of Psalms 23:3 which states, “He restores my soul; He leads me in the paths of righteousness for His name’s sake.”

Just as the Lord is able to restore a ruined Israel, He too, can restore that which is ruined in us.

  1. This stood out for me: “But all the sinners will die by the sword— all those who say, ‘Nothing bad will happen to us.’”

I think many unbelievers live with this as their motto. To believe that nothing bad will happen focuses very much on the here and now and not on the yet to come. You often hear people say “I’m good…or at least better than that guy” and while that may be true, we ALL fall short of God’s glory and we all face a certain death. Thank goodness for redemption through Christ.
