Isaiah 9

In this chapter two ways of life are described and their outcomes are revealed:

“They will attack their neighbour on the right but will still be hungry. They will devour their neighbour on the left but will not be satisfied. In the end they will even eat their own children.” Isaiah 9:20 NLT

The Lord is speaking to the Israelites, but this also applies to all who are living for themselves today. Their lack of shame, pride, and hypocrisy, all contribute to their destruction – and adding the wrath of God will bring about their utter ruin.

On the flip side, we read of those who are devoted to living a righteous life.

“Nevertheless, that time of darkness and despair will not go on forever……The people who walk in darkness will see a great light. For those who live in a land of deep darkness, a light will shine.” Isaiah 9:1a, 2 NLT

Let’s take a moment to think about this: darkness and despair not lasting forever. Actually seeing a light at the end of a long, dark tunnel. Being able to experience relief in the midst of distress.

Between these two verses (Isaiah 9:6-7) we also read, “For a child is born to us, a son is given to us. The government will rest on his shoulders, and he will be called: Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. His government and his peace will never end. He will rule with fairness and justice from the throne of his ancestor David for all eternity. The passionate commitment of the Lord of Heaven’s Armies will make this happen.”

This child born to us is the gap that bridges a life of darkness to a life of light. From a life of destruction to a life of relief. From a life of eternal wrath to a life of eternal glory.

Like any bridge in life, we just need to take the step and walk across – it’s available for all!

  1. Great thoughts. I’ve never considered that ‘famous’ verse in Isaiah to be a bridge between dark and light.

One of the verses you mentioned also stood out for me: “The people who walk in darkness will see a great light. For those who live in a land of deep darkness, a light will shine.”

This pandemic seems a little dark and we have no idea how long it will last. The promise it will end is there but it seems a long way off.

Isaiah spoke these words of truth but 700 years would pass before they would come true. The light is coming but it’s not here yet. What a relief to know God always keeps His promises.
