Micah 1

“Because of this I will weep and wail; I will go about barefoot and naked, I will howl like a jackal and moan like an owl. For Samaria’s plague is incurable; it has spread to Judah. It has reached the very gate of my people, even to Jerusalem itself.”

In this passage we read of the prophet Micah mourning. The prophet is not mourning a loss, but rather he is mourning the lost. Micah is saying that the plague of Samaria is incurable and spreading to Judah; the people are physically living, but spiritually dead.

I found this commentary regarding this chapter: “Israel’s case is desperate: Her wound is incurable; it is ruin without remedy; man cannot help her; God will not, because she will not by repentance and reformation help herself. There is indeed balm in Gilead and a physician there; but they will not apply to the physician, nor apply the balm to themselves, and therefore the wound is incurable.”

People today, like in Israel’s case, are desperate. Today’s reading caused me to question – Do I mourn for the lost? Do I weep knowing the everlasting punishment sinners receive as the prophet Micah did?

Micah demonstrates a love and a genuine concern for the lost. Do we (I)?

  1. Good thoughts to ponder.

This stood out for me: “Attention! Let all the people of the world listen! Let the earth and everything in it hear. The Sovereign Lord is making accusations against you; the Lord speaks from his holy Temple.”
    ‭‭Micah‬ ‭1:2‬ ‭NLT‬‬

Until Covid, I never realized that a single event/circumstance/plague could command the attention of the entire world. But now I realize that it’s truly possible for everyone to hear the message that God is sending: We are sinful and we need to be redeemed. Hopefully this message reaches us in the noise of everything else commanding our attention.

  2. This certainly refers to our modern age too, a stubborn generation who insist that they don’t need the Physician. Let us pray for eyes to be opened to the truth and repentance of sin.
