“But perhaps you will say to me, ‘We are trusting in the Lord our God!’ But isn’t he the one who was insulted by Hezekiah? Didn’t Hezekiah tear down his shrines and altars and make everyone in Judah and Jerusalem worship only at the altar here in Jerusalem?” Isaiah 36:7 NLT
There are a number of misconceptions regarding Christians and Christianity today and this verse provides an example of a misconception in following the Lord during the time and reign of king Hezekiah.
From the Assyrian stand-point, a god was honoured in proportion to the number of sanctuaries built, and they were to be built as high as possible for they believed this brought them closer to the gods, and would also be more acceptable to them.
Hezekiah’s previous actions of destroying the chapels and temples that were erected at their high places were, in the mind of the king of Assyria, an insult to the Lord. But the reality is, Hezekiah removed altars and high places of heathen gods and false deities, so this action was for the Lord’s honour and glory.
As followers of Christ, we need to be certain that we are following God’s direction and His leading. I am reminded of James 1:5 which says, “If you need wisdom ask our generous God and He will give it to you. He will not rebuke you for asking.” And Proverbs 2:6 reads, “For the Lord grants wisdom! From His mouth come knowledge and understanding.”
May we remember to seek the Lord for direction, wisdom, and understanding in all things. For just as a child watches every move of their parent, so the unbeliever watches every move of the believer.

We need to be careful how we behave in public for two reasons; in case we sin and bring shame on the gospel and also to shine as lights for the gospel in a dark world. Let us bring glory and lost souls to God Almighty.

“But the people were silent and did not utter a word because Hezekiah had commanded them, “Do not answer him.””
Isaiah 36:21 NLT
I teach grade 1 and it’s so hard to have kids who hear things that are not true to just stand and be silent. They want to argue, pleas their case, or violently defend their position. It is so much harder to just know the truth in your heart and just be silent. Hezekiah commanded them to not engage the messengers knowing that anything they were reporting on was not accurate. May we also realize in our daily interactions with others that we do not need to engage in every fight we are invited to.
