Isaiah 64

“Yet no one calls on your name or pleads with you for mercy. Therefore, you have turned away from us and turned us over to our sins.” Isaiah 64:7 NLT

In my last post, the Scriptures reminded me that we have choices to make and it’s when we yield to our sinful desires that we afterwards find ourselves asking the question ‘why would I do that when I know better?’

In order to conquer our sinful nature we need to call upon the name of the Lord. We need to put in the effort of reaching out to Him. This verse and translation uses the word plead – when we make a plea, we are begging for something with a sense of urgency.

I am reminded of Deuteronomy 13:4 – “It is the Lord your God you must follow and Him you must revere. Keep His commands and obey Him; serve Him and hold fast to Him”.

In prison, where I have never been, you get one phone call to make. When we are in our time of need, may our one call be unto the Lord.

One thought on “Isaiah 64

  1. This stood out for me:
“And yet, O Lord, you are our Father. We are the clay, and you are the potter. We all are formed by your hand.”
    ‭‭Isaiah‬ ‭64:8‬ ‭NLT‬‬

Growing up in the church, hearing this analogy was common. Today reading it I don’t feel it’s very accurate unless we are thinking it applies to God forming us in the womb. Clay is manipulated and changed and controlled by the maker and made into something totally at the mercy of what the potter is trying to create. We are not controlled. We are not passive lumps waiting to be throw into a piece that is out of our control. Yes God can nudge us, yes God can change us, yes God is the maker but I feel like comparing us to clay suggests we don’t have a say in what God is creating and that we just sit there on the wheel of life waiting for God to do his thing. We do have a choice (clay doesn’t) we do have a tendency to go against what our maker would want for us (clay doesn’t) and we do wander from God and have to consciously choose to come back to the “wheel” (clay doesn’t) God have us free will and doesn’t puppet us into what He wants for us it is our choice to follow or walk away.
