Nahum 3

“Get ready for the siege! Store up water! Strengthen the defences! Go into the pits to trample clay and pack it into molds, making bricks to repair the walls. But the fire will devour you; the sword will cut you down. The enemy will consume you like locusts, devouring everything they see. There will be no escape, even if you multiply like swarming locusts.” Nahum 3:14-15 NLT

The judgement on Nineveh continues in this chapter through the prophet Nahum. Nineveh is told that even if they prepare for their judgement and siege from the Lord to the best of their ability – store up water, beef up and strengthen their defences, and repair their entrance walls, it will all be in vain and ultimately useless.

Just like Nineveh, if we prepare our defences and place our faith and security in our own abilities, we will be burnt and consumed by the fire. Instead may we repent, preparing our hearts and placing our faith and security in the Lord, who sent his son Jesus to take away the sins of the world, before it is too late.

  1. This stood out for me: “All who see you will shrink back and say, ‘Nineveh lies in ruins. Where are the mourners?’ Does anyone regret your destruction?””
    ‭‭Nahum‬ ‭3:7‬ ‭NLT‬‬

On the outside of a situation, I think it’s clearer when you’re not directly involved. The people of Nineveh likely didn’t even see their sin as clearly because they were surrounded by other sinners doing the same thing. Likely outside of Nineveh people could clearly see the errors of their ways and were likely not surprised when Nineveh faded punishment and judgement. Little did the outsiders realize that we’re all as sinful as the people of Nineveh and we all need a redeemer to save us.
