Jeremiah 9

“The Lord said, ‘It is because they have forsaken my law, which I set before them; they have not obeyed me or followed my law. Instead, they have followed the stubbornness of their hearts; they have followed the Baals, as their ancestors taught them. The days are coming,’ declares the Lord, ‘when I will punish all who are circumcised only in the flesh.'” Jeremiah 9:13-14, 25 NIV

Daily we awaken and are placed in the middle of a tug-of-war. On one side of the rope, we have the Lord who has provided us with His Word, His commands, His statutes, and His law. In addition to that, when we become His child, we also receive the Holy Spirit which trains us, equips us, intercedes for us, and also convicts us. On the other side, we have our personal tasks, goals, preferences, desires, but most of all our stubbornness.

We choose who we will follow. With either decision in who we will follow, there is a circumcision of sorts – we either remove ourselves from the Lord or we remove ourselves from our personal desires.

It is not enough to know God and His law. We need a change of heart and seek His will and His law. May we cut off and remove from us that which keeps a tight grip on us and prevents us from obeying the Lord and living out His will.

  1. This stood out for me: “This is what the Lord says: “Don’t let the wise boast in their wisdom, or the powerful boast in their power, or the rich boast in their riches.”
    ‭‭Jeremiah‬ ‭9:23‬ ‭NLT‬‬

It’s easy to believe what we have accomplished or what we own is from what we have done. But wisdom, power, and wealth are fleeting. What we think we know can be disproven, power and control can be quickly overthrown by someone with greater power, and wealth can evaporate in a variety of ways. It’s so much better the place our hope and faith into something that is eternal and not fleeting.
