Jeremiah 10

“Like a scarecrow in a cucumber field, their idols cannot speak; they must be carried because they cannot walk. Do not fear them; they can do no harm nor can they do any good. But the Lord is the true God; he is the living God, the eternal King. When he is angry, the earth trembles; the nations cannot endure his wrath.” Jeremiah 10:5, 10 NIV

These two verses provide for us a contrast between idols and the Lord. Idols are made by man. They are not living so therefore they cannot speak or move around. They are not eternal, they have no emotions, they are unable to make promises or threats, and they make no commands.

The Lord, on the other hand, made mankind who have in turn made the idols. The Lord is alive and speaks to us through the Holy Spirit and never leaves us nor forsakes us. He is eternal – He is the Alpha and the Omega. The Lord is full of emotion – He can relate to us as He too feels anger, compassion, love, sadness, and tenderness. The Lord commands to rain to pour, the sun to shine, and the wind to blow. And most importantly, He provides us with the promise of salvation through the death and resurrection of his son, Jesus Christ.

The Lord is the Maker and Creator of all things. May we put our faith and hope not in that which has been made, but rather in the One who made it.

  1. The cucumber field part stood out for me because it seemed kind of random.

This stood out for me: “I know, Lord, that our lives are not our own. We are not able to plan our own course.”
    ‭‭Jeremiah‬ ‭10:23‬ ‭NLT‬‬

Oh how I want to know the future. How I want to plan my own course. How I just want to know what comes next. It takes faith to lean into God’s plan and design and to trust that His ways are better than my own.
