Jeremiah 13

“So I bought a belt, as the Lord directed, and put it around my waist. So I went and hid it at Perath, as the Lord told me. So I went to Perath and dug up the belt and took it from the place where I had hidden it, but now it was ruined and completely useless.” Jeremiah 13: 2, 5 & 7

The above verses begin with “So I bought”, “So I went”, and “So I went”. They did not begin with words like so I thought, or so I questioned, or so I considered. Previous to all of those verses, the Lord spoke to Jeremiah. It may have seemed random for God to tell Jeremiah to buy a belt to wear, to then hide it, only to dig it back up many days later. Jeremiah could have asked God why he was doing this, but he didn’t.

God placed these ‘random’ events into Jeremiah’s life for a purpose. In this case, it was to show him how the Israelites have not listened to the Lord and how they have now become completely useless.

God also places ‘random’ events into our lives. May we not dismiss these random events, but rather seek the Lord for His direction, His word, and His will during those times.

  1. This stood out for me: “Give glory to the Lord your God before it is too late. Acknowledge him before he brings darkness upon you, causing you to stumble and fall on the darkening mountains. For then, when you look for light, you will find only terrible darkness and gloom.”
    ‭‭Jeremiah‬ ‭13:16‬ ‭NLT‬‬

I had to throw out garbage last night and the bin was a ways from the door. There are no street lights and being that it was late, it was very dark. I felt uneasy about finding my way to the bin in the dark. It wasn’t far but who knows if there was wildlife around, if there was a slippery spot which would cause me to lose my balance with the heavy bags, or if I’d even be able to find it because throwing garbage in this bin is still anew experience. We can go through life in the dark. Not sure what kind of ‘wildlife’ might be out there about to get us, unknown obstacles may be in our way, and losing our way is an easy thing to do. God can (and will) shine the light for us to find the right path just like the motion sensor flood light did when I stepped into its view last night. I could see where I needed to go, that it was safe to do it, and the light continued to shine as long as I stayed in its sights. Kinda the same with God too 😅
