“One basket had very good figs, like those that ripen early; the other basket had very bad figs, so bad they could not be eaten.” Jeremiah 24:2 NIV
In this short chapter, Jeremiah is encouraged by the Lord that though the Israelites’ punishment appeared to affect all, not all were equally involved and God knew how to separate and distinguish between the good and the bad.
It would appear that those who chose captivity by the Babylonians are now lost and forgotten about, but God tells Jeremiah that this will turn out to be for their good – “My eyes will watch over them for their good, and I will bring them back to this land. I will build them up and not tear them down; I will plant them and not uproot them.” (Verse 6)
It is good for us to trust in the One who can see the whole picture. At best we can only see the past and the present but the Lord sees the past, the present, and the future as well. May we remember that it is God’s design that we share in the same struggle or disaster with others. The difference is that for some this will be a correcting rod issued by the hand of a loving Heavenly Father, while for others this will be an avenging sword in the hand of a righteous Judge.

That same verse stood out for me: “One basket was filled with fresh, ripe figs, while the other was filled with bad figs that were too rotten to eat.”
Jeremiah 24:2 NLT
What I thought was that we always have a choice. Will we be useful, delicious, and eye catching or will we be past our prime, bad, and harmful to eat? Our actions, our ability to discern the truth, and how we lead other by example will dictate what kind of fruit we will be.
