“She defiled herself with immorality and gave no thought to her future. Now she lies in the gutter with no one to lift her out. ‘Lord, see my misery,’ she cries. ‘The enemy has triumphed.'” Lamentations 1:9 NLT
Jerusalem chose to defile herself without giving any thought to her future. They never considered, nor believed, that the degree of their sin would bring them to the point of their destruction. When we choose to be reckless in our walk with the Lord, we like the Israelites, will also find ourselves in the gutter.
May we be determined to not have such a pathetic relationship with our Lord as the Israelites did. Only calling upon Him during our times of affliction and distress. Asking Him to extend even more compassion and grace to us in the areas that we have not submitted over to Him. We are filthy and need to be ashamed of our sin, not ashamed of our affliction.

Interesting contrast between ignoring the warning and pleading of Jeremiah and the regret and sadness in this opening chapter of Lamentations.
This stood out for me: “Jerusalem, once so full of people, is now deserted. She who was once great among the nations now sits alone like a widow. Once the queen of all the earth, she is now a slave.”
Lamentations 1:1 NLT
I couldn’t help but think of the loss of Prince Philip and the sadness Queen Elizabeth must feel losing her husband of 73 years. A widow, especially those who have experienced a shared long life, would have a loneliness that would be unparalleled. I imagine the Israelites felt that same loneliness when God followed through in His promises.
