Lamentations 4

“Not a king in all the earth – no one in all the world – would have believed that an enemy could march through the gates of Jerusalem.” Lamentations 4:12 NLT

The city of Jerusalem was so well fortified and had been so miraculously preserved by the Lord, that it seemed incredible and unlikely that it would ever fall into the hands of their enemy.

What a change sin makes! Sin tarnishes beauty, spoils gifts, damages relationships, and hurts others – not just ourselves. Though we often believe that we don’t struggle “with that sin” and would never fall in temptation to it, we need to remember that Jerusalem did not come to fall in one night. It was a slow fade and over time.

Let it be known and understood that we, like Jerusalem, can fall and be overtaken. It is not in our power that we remain strong. It is not in our ability that we refrain from further and deeper sin. This comes only from the Lord.

Paul wrote to the church in Galatia – “So I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh.” (Galatians 5:16)

May that be our desire – to walk hand in hand with the Spirit.

  1. That verse stood out for me as well: “Not a king in all the earth— no one in all the world— would have believed that an enemy could march through the gates of Jerusalem.”

As we come up to the anniversary of the sibling of the Titanic there is a parallel that many people were sure such a majestic ship was unsinkable. But Jerusalem and the Titanic both met an unfortunate fate. However, this also reveals a hope that the impossible (both the bad and the good) are possible. Not only can things who were thought to never be destroyed be destroyed but also destroyed things can be redeemed. The impossible *is* possible with God.
