“Our ancestors sinned and are no more, and we bear their punishment.” Lamentations 5:7 NIV
There are always consequences for our sins. Though death secures us (in this world) from some of our afflictions as a result of our sin, those we leave behind may not escape the punishment we deserve.
Though our sins, along with God’s just displeasure of them, cause our sufferings, may we hope in His pardoning mercy and in His grace. For when we have breathed our last breath, we will be punished with vengeance for a whole life of sin we committed. Unless, of course, we have accepted God’s gift of grace and eternal life, and have devoted our lives to following and modelling Christ, who bore our sins on the cross.

“Why do you continue to forget us? Why have you abandoned us for so long?”
Lamentations 5:20 NLT
Um ….So God didn’t send prophets to warn them to change from their evil ways? Oh how quickly we forget and how quickly we blame and whine. Though this does seem like typical response from someone who just chose to be oblivious to the messages and warnings this is also our typical response when things don’t go our way…or it seems like it’s my response. May we strive to examine our own hearts and recognize our own role in the situation we find ourselves in.
