“But you, Belshazzar, his son, have not humbled yourself, though you knew all this.” Daniel 5:22
Belshazzar knew of the Lord’s judgement that fell upon his father Nebuchadnezzar, but he did not take warning against it for himself. In fact, he did the opposite. He insulted God by giving orders to bring in the gold goblets that Nebuchadnezzar took from the temple in Jerusalem, so that he, his nobles, his wives, and concubines could all drink from them during his feast.
Sinners are pleased with gods that neither see, hear, nor know their thoughts and actions, for they can not be judged. However, we will all be judged by the God of gods who sees, hears, and knows all. The writings on Belshazzar’s wall is something to be considered for us all – our days are numbered, we will be judged, and all our actions will be weighed.
In reading this chapter, I am reminded of James 1:22 – But don’t just listen to God’s word. You must do what it says. Otherwise you are only fooling yourselves.
May we not just hear the word of God but actually apply it to our daily lives. May we walk by the Spirit and humble ourselves, so as to not gratify our sinful desires.

First thing that stood out for me was Belshazzar was King and I was like Daniel was King? But then I realized Daniel was Belteshazzar not Belshazzar-totally different 😉
But that made me think about today‘a reading and how it would have been easy for Belshazzar to overlook Nebuchadnezzar’s problem with pride unless he specifically took notice of it. It literally took the “writing on the wall” to make it clear. Incidentally this is where that expression originated: https://www.phrases.org.uk/meanings/the-writing-is-on-the-wall.html. We can be oblivious to mistakes made in the past and that means we are likely to repeat them.
