Daniel 7

This chapter is much more difficult to understand than the previous chapters in Daniel, but the Holy Spirit will always direct us to a portion of the text that is more plain and simple, which I trust we will make good use of.

“I, Daniel, was troubled in spirit, and the visions that passed through my mind disturbed me. I approached one of those standing there and asked him the meaning of all this. So he told me and gave me the interpretation of these things. Then I wanted to know the meaning of the fourth beast, which was different from all the others and most terrifying, with its iron teeth and bronze claws.” Daniel 7:15-16 & 19a NIV

The dream that Daniel had was not clear to him so he asked an angel for an explanation and further clarification. When we have the desire to follow God’s leading, we need to also have the desire to fully grasp and understand the sense of what we see and hear from God. As much as we need faith to go where God leads, we also need to faithfully pray to the Lord who provides all wisdom and knowledge.

May we apply the words found in Proverbs 23:12 – “Commit yourselves to instruction; listen carefully to words of knowledge.”

  1. “…. He wrote down the dream, and this is what he saw.”
    ‭‭Daniel‬ ‭7:1‬ ‭NLT‬‬

We can be active or passive in our faith. To be active means to search, to desire to know, and in the above verse to write things down in order to preserve them for future reference. To be passive would mean to wait for things to happen, to expect nothing significant, and to not attempt to explain anything to yourself or others. Daniel is the model of an active faith: he commits to following God’s instructions regardless of conflicting commands, he desires to lead by example, and wants clarity for the things he doesn’t understand. When he asks and seeks, he receives and finds.
