“Where are your ancestors now? They and the prophets are long dead. But everything I said through my servants the prophets happened to your ancestors, just as I said. As a result, they repented and said, ‘We have received what we deserved from the Lord of Heaven’s Armies. He has done what he said he would do.”’ Zechariah 1:5-6 NLT
God is eternal – who was, and is, and is to come. He is the Alpha and the Omega. He is all powerful and all knowing. He can see the big picture; that which is happening now and that which will come our way.
The message in this chapter is do not be and do not do as your fathers have done. Instead of being hardened in their evil actions by the example of their father’s sins, rather let those sins be a deterrent from them by the example of their fathers’ punishment.
God’s almighty power should encourage us to look beyond everything else and then turn to the Lord and repent. It is desirable to have the Lord as our friend and it would be very dreadful to have Him for an enemy. May we cling to the words of the Lord which endures forever and is beneficial for all, and not cling to the words of our ancestors which will soon pass away.

We can’t see beyond what is happening right now and that can be frustrating.
This stood out for me
“Then the other riders reported to the angel of the Lord, who was standing among the myrtle trees, “We have been patrolling the earth, and the whole earth is at peace.””
Zechariah 1:11 NLT
I thought it was interesting that in the midst of exile, God’s patrol declares the whole earth at peace. How can it be “peaceful” if the Israelites are exiled. Or is that when we feel peace? To feel the weight of consequence of our action, when we bear the just punishment (that we’ve been warned about), and when we are in the process of being redeemed. Is that when we feel the most peace? When we’ve done something wrong and we live in the anxiety of our conscience that is not peaceful. Why was the earth at peace during this time? Curious to think of that.
