Zechariah 9

“A prophecy: The word of the Lord is against the land of Hadrak and will come to rest on Damascus – for the eyes of all people and all the tribes of Israel are on the Lord.” Zechariah 9:1 NIV

The word of the Lord has weight. As this verse indicates, God’s word will be a burden to those who dismiss it. In today’s passage, we are reminded of Israel’s neighbours who persecuted and hated God’s people, and now a burden has been placed upon them. The wrath of God is a weight that no one can shake nor bear, and when God makes His mark, He will be sure to hit it.

The word of the Lord also carries weight for those who regard it. This will come with a hope and expectation. For the word of the Lord is true, His promises will be fulfilled, and this is all part of God’s plan, which is for our good. Just as the eyes of all the people and tribes were on God, our eyes ought to be fixed on Him as well. This is for us to witness His promises coming to fruition and thereby giving us a hope for the future.

John 3:17 tells us, “For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him.” However, we all need to make a choice; we will either be on the side of burden or on the side of hope. The side of hope sounds better to me!

  1. Great thoughts.

This stood out for me: “Rejoice, O people of Zion! Shout in triumph, O people of Jerusalem! Look, your king is coming to you. He is righteous and victorious, yet he is humble, riding on a donkey— riding on a donkey’s colt.”
    ‭‭Zechariah‬ ‭9:9‬ ‭NLT‬‬

It must have been exciting to hear that the King was coming but disappointing to think he’d arrive without the fanfare people were expecting. Also discouraging to think that it would be a LONG time for this prophecy to come to pass. I wonder if they assumed a literal donkey or that the donkey was a metaphor? I wonder what Revelation reveals…it is just a metaphor or will all the things foretold still happen?
