Zechariah 12

“And I will pour out on the house of David and the inhabitants of Jerusalem a spirit of grace and supplication. They will look on me, the one they have pierced, and they will mourn for him as one mourns for an only child, and grieve bitterly for him as on grieves for a firstborn son.” Zechariah 12:10 NIV

The Holy Spirit is gracious and merciful, and is the author of all grace and holiness. One of the truths of the Holy Spirit, is that when we become children of God, the Holy Spirit comes and dwells within us. This amazing gift from our Heavenly Father has many purposes, but one of those attributes is to convict us of our sin.

The conviction received from the Holy Spirit is for our benefit. 2 Corinthians 7:10 tells us that, “For the kind of sorrow God wants us to experience leads us away from sin and results in salvation. There’s no regret for that kind of sorrow. But worldly sorrow, which lacks repentance, results in spiritual death.”

True repentance is heart felt. Looking to the cross and understanding that Christ was pierced for our transgressions ought to create a desire within us to sin no more. The mourning of sin and the change in our lives is evidence and proof of the gift of grace, which comes only from the Holy Spirit.

  1. Six times the phrase “on that day” is mentioned. A reminder that 1. God makes and keeps his promises 2. We don’t know the day of time it will happen 3. There will be a day where all our questions will be answered and God’s plan revealed.

Jesus promised that He would go an prepare a place for us and then return. “On that day” so many of our questions will be answered and God’s timing will be revealed. What a glorious day!
