Esther 3

“All the royal officials at the king’s gate knelt down and paid honour to Haman, for the king had commanded this concerning him. But Mordecai would not kneel down or pay him honour.” Esther 3:2 NIV

An interesting fact is that the word “God” or “Lord” is not even mentioned in the book of Esther. Despite that fact, we have recently read how the Lord is still very much behind the scenes, guiding the affairs of Susa through His providence, and today we read of Mordecai maintaining his position and religion as a Jew.

This reminded me that God is omnipresent. In Psalm 139:7 David asks the question, “Where can I go from your Spirit? Or where can I flee from your presence?” And in verses 8-10 David answers his questions with, “If I go up to the heavens, you are there, if I make my bed in the depths, you are there. If I rise on the wings of the dawn, if I settle on the far side of the sea, even there your hand will guide me, your right hand will hold me fast.”

Scripture tells us that God is present both in heaven and on earth at the same time; there is no place in the universe that is away from God’s presence. “The eyes of the Lord are in every place, watching the evil and the good.” (Proverbs 15:3)

May that knowledge along with the promise that He will never leave us nor forsake us, act as a source of comfort for the believer. Wherever we go, we will find ourselves in the protection of the Lord’s presence, as He is not only with us, but He goes before us.

  1. Pride is the downfall for so many of us. I would guess Mordecai was one (or perhaps the only) of the people not bowing. Instead of seeing all the ones who were, Haman focuses on Mordecai and plots revenge on the entire Jewish nation. If Haman had not pursued punishment because of his bruised ego, things may not have turned out quite so horrible for Haman.
