“When Haman entered, the king asked him, ‘What should be done for the man the king delights to honour?’ Now Haman thought to himself, ‘Who is there that the king would rather honour than me?’” Esther 6:6 NIV
Oh how our pride gets in the way and deceives us! It is in our pride that we find ourselves being enticed by the desire of instant gratifications, and in the conceit that we have of ourselves, that our hearts are deceived by what we believe to be our own accomplishments. This is evident with Haman, as he thought that the king loved and valued no one but himself, but it was his own pride deceived him.
There are many passages that warn us against having pride in our hearts. May we not permit the respect and value that others profess for us to be greater than it is, or seems to be, and in turn may we guard our hearts so that we may not think too well of ourselves.

“…Since Mordecai—this man who has humiliated you—is of Jewish birth, you will never succeed in your plans against him. It will be fatal to continue opposing him.””
Esther 6:13b NLT
When we are on the path to destruction, it is seldom a one time bad decision. Usually, it involves multiple poor judgment decisions that lead us away from what we know to be the right path. Haman was warned: it could be (and would be) fatal if Haman continued on his quest to do away with Mordecai. May we heed to the warnings of others when we are going against what’s good for us.
